'88 Charvel Model 88 Limited Edition Tobacco Sunburst #0887, African ribbon mahogany, sharkfin inlays, reverse headstock, EMG 81, 3.81 kg and more.
Number 0887 of no more than 1,000 – this Charvel is a genuine piece of 80s shred history!
In 1988 Charvel launched the Model 88 as a limited special edition of its Japanese Model Series: 1,000 guitars, around half of them for the US market. Grover Jackson designed it himself. While the other bolt-on models had basswood bodies, the Model 88 got African ribbon mahogany, plus mother-of-pearl sharkfins and the reverse headstock. It's also the only guitar in the Model Series with a four-digit serial number.
And it looks the part: the high-gloss Tobacco Sunburst makes the striped mahogany figure glow, while the pearl sharkfins on the rosewood board and the pointy reverse headstock make it unmistakable. The black hardware adds just the right contrast.
The one-piece bolt-on maple neck measures 21.0 mm at the 1st fret and 23.15 mm at the 12th – nice and slim and fast – and the 22 jumbo frets make legato and bends a breeze. The Jackson JT6 double-locking vibrato stays in tune even under heavy bar abuse.
From the factory it had a passive Jackson J-95 (no longer included); ours has an active EMG 81 slanted at the bridge. It delivers plenty of output and a tight, compressed response, and stays quiet and precise even with lots of gain – just right for late-80s riffs and solos. The woods, inlays, headstock and Jackson hardware (vibrato, tuners) match the factory spec.
Condition: this Charvel has been played regularly. The frets show playing wear, but they won't need levelling any time soon. We've generously reflected this in a reduced price compared with similar guitars. It comes in a Gator case (not original) with our data sheet, as pictured.
A rare limited edition from the golden era of Charvel and Jackson – as exciting for collectors as it is for anyone who just wants to plug in and play.
