Dennis Fano and his team don't build ordinary guitars — they build instruments with a good helping of vintage soul in them. The workmanship, the timber and the hardware are all at the very top of the boutique game, and you feel it in every part of this Miris J Custom. It comes from single ownership: a 2025 custom order, and a very tastefully specified one.
To look at, it's a vintage lover's dream. The transparent Amber sits wafer-thin over a nicely figured swamp ash body and lets the wood breathe, framed by cream body binding and finished off with a matching Amber headstock. The real trick, though, is the light ageing: Novo has conjured up very fine, discreet checking that's barely visible in some light and then suddenly flashes up with charming crackle (see the photos). It never once looks overdone — it looks like a vintage guitar that has genuinely matured over decades. Add the cool offset shape, the black pickguard and chrome hardware and you've got 60s attitude in its purest form.
And the sound? This is where Novo's quality really shows. At a featherweight 3.09 kg the swamp ash body is extremely resonant and rings out loud and lively even unplugged — you feel the fast response and the long, airy fundamental straight away. The two Lindy Fralin P-90s are the perfect choice here: they land in the sweet spot between single-coil clarity and humbucker warmth. Bell-like jangle, raw rhythm sounds, fat singing P-90 leads — all of it is there, always with that woody vintage growl. The Mastery M1 bridge with its RV vibrato and “lightning bolt” arm is the icing on top.
Playing it is a pleasure, thanks to a nicely figured roasted maple neck with an East Indian rosewood board, a medium C profile, 9.5–14" compound radius and Jescar frets — modern and fast, but with genuine vintage feel in the hand. Take a look at the grain on the body too; the finest timber went into this one, which is presumably why it comes in at 3.09 kg.
A one-off from single ownership, with this spec, this weight and ageing this good, doesn't turn up every day. Offset and boutique people: this one's worth moving quickly on. It comes in its original Novo Deluxe padded soft case with the spec sheet and case candy, a good €1,000 below new price.
