Elm instead of ash, sunburst instead of blonde and no fewer than three Häussel pickups – this Suwak thinline is anything but a T-style off the peg!
Once again Suwak shows that the courage to go its own way, combined with a huge wealth of experience, can lead to an exceptional instrument – and when it comes to tone and versatility, it's hard to beat.
The body is elm, topped with a bookmatched droptop – also elm – with a strong, lively grain. Over it sits a classic 3-tone sunburst in a wafer-thin nitro finish, lovingly aged as a heavy relic. Instead of a classic f-hole, Suwak has milled its own circles into the body – underlining the unusual specs visually too. With the thinline body, the guitar weighs in at just 3.14 kg.
The beautifully figured 3A birdseye maple neck is – a Suwak speciality – treated with nothing but oil and wax, so it feels like an instrument that's already been played in. Add a comfortable modern oval "C" profile, a ziricote fretboard with its dark, lively figuring and a 9.5" radius.
No corners were cut on the electronics: a Häussel P90 Vintage at the neck, a Häussel Hot N humbucker in the middle and a Häussel TE-ST A5 at the bridge, plus a treble bleed. According to Harry Häussel, the P90 Vintage at the neck is his oldest P90: Alnico 3 magnets, a full, round tone and a quick, clean response. In the middle there's a Häussel Hot N – a powerful, bluesy humbucker with well-judged mids, good output and an Alnico 5 magnet, yet always transparent and clearly defined. The TE-ST A5 at the bridge is wound with an Alnico 5 magnet and AWG 41 wire and does without a baseplate – Häussel describes it as a very "fat" T-style bridge sound. The humbucker can be split via a push/pull pot on the tone control. The 5-way switch gives you the familiar basic positions of a Strat. A mini switch adds the bridge pickup in positions 4 and 5: in position 4 all three pickups are then active, and in position 5 the P90 and the bridge single coil work together – for wonderfully Tele-like sounds. That takes the palette from glassy Tele twang through throaty P90 growl to fat humbucker tones – a true all-rounder for stage and studio.
The Kluson, Göldo and Allparts hardware is all nickel and aged to match the finish. It comes in a case with a Suwak cap, T-shirt and certificate of authenticity.
If you like, we'll fit a Bigsby B5 for €200 – vibrato opens up the tonal possibilities quite a bit further.
