Paoletti Guitars do something nobody else does: they build their instruments from old chestnut that comes out of retired Tuscan wine barrels. That isn't a marketing line but a concept with real consequences. This wood is decades old, has dried out over that time and worked with wine inside the barrel, and it simply sounds different from freshly cut material.
What comes out is a tone with a character all its own: midrange-forward, woody and dry, with a fast response and none of the slightly smooth, sterile quality you sometimes hear in modern timber. Then there's the look. Chestnut is coarse-pored and lively in its grain, and Paoletti don't hide that under thick lacquer — they put it on show. Every one of these guitars looks different, because every piece of wood has a different history.
This example was made as a personal custom version for Meister Ede, and the combination is well thought through. The HSS layout makes it extremely versatile: in the single-coil positions you get bell-like cleans and the characteristic hollow quack of the in-between settings, while a humbucker waits at the bridge for when things need to get denser.
The highlight, though, is the reverse headstock. It doesn't only look unusual — it genuinely changes how the guitar plays. The reversed layout changes the string lengths behind the nut: the low strings get tighter, the high ones a little more giving. The result is a firmer bass foundation and noticeably more supple bends at the top. Play one and you understand why some guitarists won't go back.
All told, an instrument that deliberately steps away from the norm without ever doing it for its own sake. It sounds like itself, it plays superbly, and it looks like nothing else.
A characterful one-off from Ede's Private Stock. This is the guitar Ede won the audition with for the band Höhner, and it was his main instrument for live and studio work for years.
