New: the Qcumber Guitars Sin Black Bold — at last another Qcumber Sin in the shop, this time dressed in black nitro.
Ede is always on the lookout for small, serious boutique workshops, which is how the collaboration with Micha at Qcumber Guitars came about back in 2024. Michael Gorissen is the builder behind Qcumber. After many years as a guitar tech at Art of Sound in Cologne he decided to go his own way, and in his workshop in the south of the city he makes one-offs by hand — no CNC, no pre-made parts. The wood is hand-picked, chosen for weight as well as looks, and the only finish he uses is nitro, applied very thinly.
The “Sin”, with its set neck and in this case a two-piece mahogany body, is built for sustain and a slightly compressed tone in the best sense of that word. The notes practically jump out at you, unplugged or through an amp. The Heavy Horse Custom pickups give creamy sounds with plenty of sustain and body. There's also a bass cut, continuously variable, for when you want things leaner or funkier. The treble cut works much like a tone control but far more gradually, which opens up a lot of shades in between. The tremolo holds tuning and adds a bit more sparkle and retro flavour.
At 3.5 kg and nicely balanced, the Sin stays comfortably light, sits steady on a strap and is made for long sessions and loud amps. Take a look at the shape, which is beautifully executed, and at the abalone inlays and binding, which make Qcumber's ambitions clear — and these are built in very small numbers. Because Micha doesn't have to live off guitar building alone, he can price his instruments more than generously. Which lands us at a genuine bargain, for a handmade instrument from just down the road, built to a very high standard.
